This post goes out to all those environmentalists, as well as teachers from my environmental chemistry classes, in college, to my elementary school teachers who instilled a respect for the earth, and taught me the consequences of pollution. My final semester in college I took an climate change class, and I tell you I could write a dissertation on pollution from right outside our house! April always laughs at me because I am always getting on my soap box about people littering here. We live in a BEAUTIFUL area of the world. The mountains are gorgeous, but don't look too closely or you'll see years worth of trash dumped down the hill. This really gets to me for two reasons: firstly I think it's the people's responsibility to look after their country. And it isn't as though the government doesn't provide facilities to help out. In our town their our plenty of dumpsters and trashcans, but people insist on throwing it into the street, or down the mountain. Secondly, it also gets to me, because on ALL the tourist pamphlets it always says "help keep our country clean, please don't litter". I think I should write to the pamphlet publishers and inform them, that it's not so much the foreigners that litter, but the nationals.
Because the litter bothers me so much, I always make it a point to walk up our stairs and down the hill a little ways to throw our trash in the dumpster. Our neighbours have noticed this and asked me why I don't throw it down the mountain. I tell them why, and I tell them they should also throw their trash in the dumpster, to which they always say "we're in South Asia, you're in South Asia. When you're here throw it down the mountain!!!!" Well you can imagine my response to this comment!!!! Here is a picture April took one day when I was on a mission to throw away our trash!
